Dómr
The Court of Time & Memory
Most of you know that I have an interest in history, philosophy, parables, and the messages they contain. One of these concepts that has consistently found its way into the forefront of my mind and research is Dómr. It keeps emerging in various discussions throughout my Travels in conversations related to legacy, honor, and remembrance.
Dómr translates from Old Norse into doom, judgement, or reputation in the modern English language in its many derivations. However, historically it was the concept of an individual’s actions being inextricably woven into the tapestry of time, referring to the impact or effect their actions had on the world around them. Dómr was viewed as the living representation of past, present and future deeds. It was believed that all men and gods would eventually meet their fate, and that their Dómr would live beyond them.
Dómr is viewed as an integral part of the collective memory of a community, a tapestry woven from Urðr, Verðandi, Skuld, and Orlog; threads woven into the flexible yet preordained web of fate. Urðr represents “that which was”, actions or deeds already performed, unchanging and irreversible. Verðandi represents “that which is”, things presently unfolding, yet to be concluded. Skuld represents “that which is yet to come”, things yet to be revealed, though likely to occur. Orlog represents an individual’s influence on the other threads in relation to their actions or deeds, the fate chosen up until the moment of their departure from the realm of the living. Cumulatively it became the immortal reputation of how each person met the fate of their circumstances, for better or worse, their Dómr.
Dómr is the representation of a person’s reputation in the court of time, determining how they are to be remembered by those they leave behind. Will they be considered a villain, poorly represented for all time due to a multitude of selfish or dishonorable behaviors? Are they a person to be emulated, remembered for their kind disposition, courageous deeds, or honorable acts? Or worse yet, will they be forgotten for all time, failing to conduct themselves in a manner worth remembering, positively or negatively. Dómr’s purpose is to inspire each person to live honorably, performing acts and deeds that will outlast their physical form, playing their part, contributing to the tapestry of fate.
As we discuss legacy, expectations, and accountability in relation to modern Masonry, perhaps we should consider how future Masons and society might view our actions and deeds. Will we be worthy of taking our place, for better or worse, in the tapestry stretching from time immemorial into the unknown? Will we become a part of those distant patterns whose designs are known only to the Supreme Architect of the Universe? Will we stand the test of time working honorably and diligently to represent the values that we have obligated ourselves to?
As we sit in our Lodges, or discuss the Craft and its future with our Brethren or prospects, perhaps we might consider the way our individual and collective efforts might be recorded. While I am not certain if fate is predestined, or if we can affect its course, I am certain that how we meet the challenges presented to us will determine how we are remembered. May we meet our fates and our futures with courage and strength of will, as just and upright Masons.
Next weeks Travelers article will feature a fellow Traveler from our community, Brother Tim Hyclak. He wrote a letter called “Perfection” addressing some of the misconceptions we may encounter on our path to self-improvement, in and out of the Craft.
